Imerys, Transform to perform

Sustainable development

Imerys is committed to respecting the ecosystems surrounding its operations and preserving biodiversity throughout the life of a mine. Our mining sites and quarries are restored on an ongoing basis, in order to preserve local fauna and flora.

Our mining and processing operations use land and natural resources. This can affect biodiversity and ecosystems. We conduct our mining activities in a manner that is compatible with biodiversity conservation through relevant planning and restoration. Our “Post-Mining Rehabilitation” protocol requires our operations to implement restoration methods not only after the mine has closed, but during the site’s operating life as well.

Our commitments

Given the serious global threat to biodiversity, Imerys wants to further structure and harmonize its approach. As one of the priorities of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, Imerys has designed and implemented a biodiversity project in line with international CSR standards, the main goals of the National Biodiversity Strategy and the general commitments of act4nature, the collective initiative launched by Entreprises pour l’Environnement (EpE) and other partners to mobilize businesses for the protection of biodiversity.

Between June and December 2017, Imerys carried out an assessment of the issues facing its business, in collaboration and consultation with key stakeholders, and based on the EBEvie approach.

The action program was drawn up between late 2017 and early 2018 by an internal working group comprising a range of support and operational functions. This program is designed to respond to these challenges and will be implemented at all Imerys sites around the world. It is based on four key areas:

1. design and deploy a global continuous improvement approach
2. initiate and conduct studies and research on biodiversity knowledge and conservation
3. develop pilot projects
4. raise awareness, train and involve internal and external stakeholders

Partnership for biodiversity knowledge and conservation

The biodiversity of our world is under threat. Fully conscious of its own responsibility, Imerys has made this key issue one of the priorities of its CSR commitments. Jean-Philippe Siblet, Director of Expertise at the French National Museum of Natural History, and Christine Dénériaz, Environmental Director of the Imerys group explain what is at stake.

Imerys signs a collaboration, research and expertise agreement for biodiversity knowledge and conservation with UMS 20016 Patrimoine Naturel.
